[abstract]
Terrorism is a spreading global threat with no respect for borders. Terrorist groups learn from one another, sharing resources, intelligence, expertise and technology. To effectively combat this rising tide, institutions need to cooperate, work closely together and share expertise and knowledge on a regional and international scale. This paper presents a technical review of materials and explosive devices commonly used by terrorist bombers, the latest technologies available for detecting bulk and trace explosives, and forensic techniques currently used for screening at scenes and laboratory identifications of explosives, precursors, post-blast products and other physical evidence.
