Our Professional Code of Ethics
“If the law has made you a witness,
Remain a man of science.
You have no victim to avenge,
No guilty or innocent person to convict or save –
You must bear testimony within the limits of science.”
Dr. P.C.H. Brouardel,
19th Century French Medico-legalist
The spotlight and scrutiny on forensic science, with its advancement in capabilities and increased role in the Courts, have grown in recent years. Sensational headlines in the media and the popularity of crime drama series such as CSI and Law and Order have conditioned the man in the street to expect forensic evidence to be one of the most important and crucial elements in solving a crime.
Equally important to the highest standards of competency in forensic investigation and analysis, but often not as well-recognised, is professional ethics and responsibility. After all, what good is a well-documented and well-preserved piece of evidence if it was not examined and analysed by unbiased, objective and independent personnel?
As forensic scientists serving truth and justice, it is imperative that we abide by a stringent code of ethics accepted by the forensic community. This framework provides a set of guiding principles1 which serve as an ethical compass for upholding integrity in every facet and aspect of our work. TFEG scientists consider our strong commitment to professional ethics as central and essential to the public’s confidence in the overall quality of our forensic services.
The above statement by Dr. P.C.H. Brouardel very aptly describes the mindset every forensic practitioner should possess and incorporate into daily work in the quest for scientific truth. The role of a forensic practitioner is to be open-minded and non-partisan, letting the evidence speak for itself. TFEG scientists take great pride in conducting all examinations and reviews thoroughly, approaching them in an independent and objective manner without bias. We strive to clearly state and properly qualify the significance of findings in our reports. We are committed to presenting conclusions that are rigorously supported by, and based solely on the evidence. Our reputation has been, and will always be built on providing expert opinions within the limits of our professional expertise, insulated from extraneous information, influences or pressure from another party.
We believe that personal opinion of a person’s guilt or innocence has no place in a forensic laboratory; that duty should be left to the Court of Law.
